The hamlet of Chopta - that is also tipped as Switzerland of India - is amongst the most beautiful and picturesque place in the whole Himalayas. The breathtaking view of the Himalayas from Chopta is a treat for eyes and soul. Chopta is situated on the Gopeshwar - Ukhimath (also spelled as Ookhimath) road at a distance of 35 km from Ukhimath and about 40-45 km from Gopeshwar or Chamoli. Chopta is situated an altitude of 2900 meters above sea level.

Chopta - Tungnath Temple - Chandrashila Summit trek can be done throughout the year. Of course heavy snowfall may deter your progress if you decide to pursue this trek from late December till mid-March. The peak top is 4090 meters above MSL. It is a short hike beyond the Tungnath temple. The Chandrashila summit affords the most beautiful view of the Chaukhamba, Kedarnath, Bunderpunch, the majestic Nanda Devi and an array of other prominent peaks of Uttarakhand Himalayas.



Tungnath Temple

Tungnath temple holds religious importance to Hindus. The temple is amongst one of the five temples of Panch-Kedar shrines, each of them are utterly important to Hindus sentiments. Tungnath Temple is a prominent shrine where Lord Shiva shed one of His body part.

The temple lies at 3680m above MSL and is 3.5 km trek from starting point Chopta. A little less than 2 km further ahead is Chandrashila Top the highest point of this mountain. It is an excellent destination for 3-5 days light trekking option in trans-Himalayan region.


Deoriatal Lake has captivating surroundings with Deodar, Cedar, Oakwood and Rhododendron forest all around. The mighty Chaukhamba Peak reflects in the pristine waters of this lake, making it a photographers delight.

There are options to trek from Ukhimath to Deoria tal lake (7-km) and further Deoriatal to Chopta (16-km). Trek to Tungnath temple (3-km) and Chandrashila top and back is about 10-km. Chopta is a road-head.

Deoriatal Lake

Trekking to Tungnath temple and further to Chandrashila Top is easy hike taking us to altitude of approximately 4100 meters above MSL. The Tungnath temple is about 3650 meters. The trek route to Tungnath temple offers panoramic view of Garhwal Himalaya range.



The trek from Chopta to Tungnath temple should ideally be combined with a visit Deoria tal lake, which is in not far from Chopta. You can hike to Deoriatal from Sari village, which is merely 3-km. A great way to enjoy the lake is by staying at least one night there.
