Description:

Panch Kedar trek in Uttarakhand is a holy Yatra (holy procession) to five Shiva temples that must be accomplished in a strict order. The mythological reference of Panch Kedar yatra can be traced in ancient Hindu text (vedas) with the story traced to Padavas of Mahabharat. It is believed that pursuing Panch Kedar trek is one step closer to Moksha (Nirvana). Due to its sacred status the Yatra trail is followed by dedicated Shaivites (followers of Lord Shiva) from across the world, especially the Hindus. It is believed that Lord Shiva disassembled His body parts and spread them at five different locations. Each of the temples has one body part and thus becoming sacred shrines for Hindus.

  • Kedarnath: 3583 m – Hump
  • Rudranath – 2300 m – Face
  • Tunganath – 3700 m – Arms
  • Madhyamaheshwar – 3500 m – Navel
  • Kalpeshwar – 2200 m – Head

The mythological story of Panch Kedar refers to the family of Pandavas, who went about looking for Lord Shiva to pay-up for their sins for the killings they committed during war with their cousins (Kauravas’). However, Lord was Shiva wanted to stay aloof as He was angered by the act of Pandavas. Lord Shiva broke-up his body parts in five pieces and spread them around in Himalayas – that are known as Panch Kedar.

The trek to Panch Kedar shrines is a long one and need a good couple of weeks. Besides witnessing the holy shrines, trekkers get a glimpse of the remote Himalayas and amazing sceneries all around. Throughout the trek one can witness the gigantic snow-clad peaks of Indian Himalayas, rare flora & fauna and culture of remote villages nestled in these mountains.

To accomplish Panch Kedar trek one needs to prepare well in terms of equipment, fitness, the right weather and challenges that nature offers. You also need a trekking crew to guide you through and, therefore, this trek should not be attempted on your own, unless you are a skilled mountaineer. Write or call Dreamcatcher Adventure if you want to pursue Panch Kedar Yatra and we make appropriate arrangement for the same.
