Cham Dham Yatra (चारधाम यात्रा) is the journey to the Four important shrines of Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarakhand, India. Successful completion of the journey is supposed to help attain liberation from materialistic world and brings one step closer to the Nirvana. The Char Dham yatra comprises of following temples/shrines:
Yamunotri – Temple near the origin of Yamuna River, a major tributary of the Ganges
Gangotri – The temple at Gangotri is associated with the Source of Ganges.
Kedarnath – A permanent seat of Lord Shiva worshipped by Hindus. Learn more about Kedarnath Yatra.
Badrinath – The most visited of the four shrines is the temple of Lord Shiva.
In ancient times there was no road-access to any of the Char Dham and traditionally people just walked all the way from Rishikesh onwards. Today, road access is available to Gangotri and Badrinath temples. However, one still needs to walk to Yamunotri (6-km and back) and Kedarnath (14-km and back) shrines. Yatra by Helicopter is also possible to Kedarnath. One must drive to Augustmuni or Phata to access Helicopter services to Kedarnath shrine.
